Brigitte Ann-Marie Bardot was born on September 28, 1934 in France. She took dance lessons early in her teens. She decided to take up ballet as a career. She was accepted into the prestigious National Superior Conservatory of Paris for Music and Dance in 1947 and there she attended ballet classes conducted by choreographer Boris Knyazev. |
She took her first steps towards modeling as a career with the help of her mother’s acquaintance by participating in a fashion show in 1949. She appeared on the cover of Elle in March 1950 and got noticed by several film producers. Her debut was in a comedy film Le Trou Normand in 1952. She got married to Roger Vadim in 1952. She appeared in 17 films from 1952 to 1956.
Her French language films were dubbed in English for international viewers. Her films of that period were light romantic dramas. The film directors tried to portray her sexuality in these films. She received maximum media attention when she attended Cannes Film Festival in April 1953. She also played some small roles in English movies such as ‘Act of Love’ (1954), ‘Helen of Troy’ (1954), and ‘Doctor at Sea’ (1955).
Roger Vadim was not satisfied with the success of her career. An art film ‘And God created Woman’ was made which became an international success. American film makers did not consider her suitable for their movies due to her poor English and a strong accent.
She has been credited for popularizing bikini swimwear. She has married several times. She gave birth to her only son in 1960 from her second marriage to actor Jacques Charrier. She acted in many more films and participated in musical shows. She appeared in nude photos in Playboy magazine in 1974 to celebrate her 40th birthday. In 1973, just before her 40th birthday, she retired from entertainment industry.
She became an animal activist and in 1986 she established a foundation for the welfare and protection of animals. She has donated more than $140,000 for mass sterilization and adoption of stray dogs. She has been convicted several times for inciting religious hatred.
