Famous Spanish Artists


If there is one thing which would make Spain outshine the rest of the world, it would be her artists. Some of the prodigies of art owe their origin to this country. Spain has given to the world certain master pieces that are valued even after centuries after the respective artist passed away.

The artistic talents of Spain can be traced back to the 16th century, referred as the Golden century of Spain. During the 16th and 17th centuries, Spanish painters such as Velázquez, El Greco, Ribera and Murillo were at the heights of creativity. Francisco de Goya is a very accomplished artist in the 18th century Spanish art scenario. In the 20th century, Spain was at its creative best with painters like Juan Gris, Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí, and Picasso. The splendor of their artistic legacy can be viewed to date in the Madrid’s Museo Reina Sofia. 

Francisco de Goya, a painter and printmaker, was an esteemed artist in the court of the Spanish King. His outstanding flair for colors proved to be an influence for artists for generations to come.

Salvador Dali excelled in surrealism. His work shows traces of inspiration from the Renaissance epitome.

Frida Kahlo’s work was an amalgamation of Realism, Symbolism and Surrealism. It often depicted her personal life grievances and sexual instincts.

However, the name that stands synonymous with modern art is that of the genius Pablo Picasso. His name was predominant during the 20th century, when he created many masterpieces in paintings, prints, sculptures and ceramics.

Fernando Botero Angulo was an extraordinary Colombian artist, who came into limelight after wining an award at Salon de Artistas Colombianos in 1959.

Diego Rivera was a Mexican painter married to another prominent artist, Frida Kahlo. He received fame for painting murals.

Joaquín Sorolla produced some incredible work and his forte was portraits and landscapes. He preferred his native land as the theme of his paintings.

Joan Miro was an internationally acclaimed artist, who excelled in the fields of painting, sculptor and ceramics. He particularly opposed the conventional style of painting.   

Many profess that Spanish art swears by the name of Diego Velázquez, a renowned painter in the court of King Philip IV. He produced marvelous portraits in contemporary style, mainly of the royal family. A masterpiece, Las Meninas created by the artist is rated amongst the best that Spain ever produced.
