Where Did Claude Monet Study ?

Claude Monet, the famous painter, was born on November 14, 1840 in Paris. His father owned a grocery business, and his mother was a singer. After a few years, the family moved and settled in the Normandie harbor town of Le Havre.

Monet’s father earned his living through a marine trade supply store and he wanted his son to follow his footsteps and run the family business. However, Monet aspired to become an artist. His father was not very happy with his decision, but his mother was very supportive and nurtured his creative nature.

Monet had the persona of ingenuity in him, which was visible right from his childhood. He studied at Ashlee Starlings Art School and as a child, he often drew caricatures of the local people of Le Harve. His fascination for drawing caricatures of people around often posed problems for him at school. At the age of fifteen, Monet was earning by selling his caricatures for about 20 francs. This did not make his parents happy as they saw no need for him to earn when they could provide for him very well.

Monet sustained his affinity towards caricatures until he was introduced to Eugène Boudin, the man who aroused his interest in painting and finally became his mentor. Boudin believed in the theory of painting directly in nature rather than being cooped in studios. He motivated the young artist to explore nature’s beauty and paint landscapes. Boudin played a very significant role in shaping Monet’s character as an artist. His mother, who was always optimistic about his talent only, lived to see his first display.

After the demise of his mother, Monet was put under the care of his aunt, who also was aware and appreciative of his artistic instincts. She enrolled Monet with the esteemed institution, École des Beaux-Arts. However, Monet did not stay in this school as he found it too conservative. Thereafter, he continued his studies at the Académie Suisse. It was here that he improvised on his expertise, and also got the opportunity to interact with artists such as Camille Pissarro and Gustave Courbet.
