Interesting Facts About Pablo Picasso

Pablo Picasso, one of the most memorable artists of the world was also the co-founder of the Cubist movement. His life history projects some very intriguing facets. Here are some interesting facts about Pablo Picasso.

Picasso’s actual name at the time of being baptized had 23 words in it. His real name was Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Martyr Patricio Clito Ruíz y Picasso. The name ‘Picasso’ comes from his mother’s name, Maria Picasso y Lopez, whereas the other names take their inspiration from famous saints.

During the time of his birth, the mid wife thought the child to be still born and leaving him as dead, only attended to his mother. However, it was an uncle, Don Salvador, a doctor by profession, who discovered the legend to be alive but extremely weak.

Showing the true traits of a genius, Picasso’s first word was ‘piz’, which is the short form of the word ‘pencil’ in Spanish. Born in the house of an artist, his father, an art professor, commenced his training at the age of just 7. Very soon, the professor found his young son superseding his own caliber. Picasso’s first painting, Le Picador, was done at the age of 9; whereas his first big work came at the age of 15 in the form of ‘Academic’.

Academics were never Picasso’s strength. At school, the artist was frequently detained, a regular feature that he on the contrary enjoyed as it gave him time to draw. His sole focus was on fine art. Picasso was a rebel right from childhood, often defying traditions. Even when on the rolls of the Royal Academy of Madrid, he insisted on unconventional dressing and sported long hair. The man obtained his first contract in Paris from the art dealer, Pere Menach, for an amount of 150 francs per month.

In a bizarre incident in 1911, the police interrogated Picasso on the suspicion of having stolen the master piece, Mona Lisa. However, he was soon released. Owing to the use of cubical figures in abundance as part of their paintings, Picasso and Georges Braque co-founded an art movement known as cubism. One of the most notable war paintings of Picasso was ‘Guernica’, reflecting the destruction after the German bombing. The painting highlights the humane aspect of the artist’s personality and shows how deeply he was struck by the issue.

Picasso was a thorough romantic. He is known to have many relationships despite being married. Fidelity towards one life partner was not his cup of tea. When it came to women, the playboy artist believed in plenty. His most prominent lover was the famous artist Dora Maar.
