The Best Of Salvador Dali

In the early hours of the morning of May 11 in the year 1904 saw the birth of a child, who would go on to become of the most popular artists of the surrealist movement. The child was christened Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dali I Domenech.

Dali was born in Figueres, Spain which was a small agricultural town at the foothills of the Pyrenees, about sixteen miles from the French border. Born in a wealthy family, Dali spent a comfortable childhood. In the later years of his life, he lived with his wife, Gala in Port Lligat.

The artist after gaining formal training at the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid conquered quick fame with his exhibition in Barcelona in 1925. Three of his incredible pieces of art fetched him international acclaim, ‘The Basket of Bread’ being one of them. Thereafter, the artist moved to Paris and became a part of the surrealist movement.

One of his best piece of work is a painting in surrealist style entitled The Persistence of Memory, produced in 1931. The work demonstrates melting pocket watches. There is a human figure noticeable in the centre of the canvas, probably portraying the artist himself, a recurring feature in most of his work. The bottom left side of the painting displays an orange colored clock covered in ants. The depiction of ants was another very regular aspect in Dali’s work. He used the insect to personify death. The picture shows landscape as well. The painter through the medium of melting or flaccid watches seems to be making an attempt to break the belief of rigidity linked with time.

The artist produced many other excellent pieces of work without being confined to any distinct style or medium. The man constantly evolved as an artist, experimenting with different styles, which is evident through his impressionist paintings, surrealist work and paintings in the classical period. Dali spread his horizon of work from painting to sculptures, graphics, films, photographs and jewels. He explored many fields, added his creative touch to each one of them.

In his career, Dali produced more than 1,500 paintings. He was also involved in illustrations for books, lithographs, designs for theatre sets and costumes, drawings, sculptures and various other projects, including animation work for Disney. In association with Jack Bond, he also made a movie named ‘Dali in New York’ in 1965.

An artist with immense vision and imagination, Dali managed to attract a lot of media attention due to his bizarre mannerisms, because of which he was criticized by many. Salvador Dali expired in his birth town on January 23, 1989 from cardiac arrest.
