Vincent Van Gogh And His Artwork




Vincent Van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter, who was born on March 30, 1853. His artwork had a great influence on all the art in the 20th century. Although he sold just one painting while he was alive, he achieved fame and name a few years after his death. Today, Van Gogh and his artwork are considered to be basis of modern art.

 

Van Gogh actually started painting in his late twenties. In early adulthood, he worked for a firm that dealt with art in The Hague, London and Paris. After leaving this work, he then moved to England, where he worked as a teacher. Van Gogh did not think that he would become a painter. His calling was for a pastor and he wanted to spend time preaching the gospel. He, in fact, worked as preacher in a mining town located in Belgium. It was during this time that he began to sketch. In 1885, he painted his first major artwork entitled The Potato Eaters. He used earthy colors and was not known to use vibrant colors that are seen in his later work.

He then moved to Paris in March 1886 where he got to know French Impressionist painters. It is then the tones and hues in his painting became colorful. He also started developing his own style of painting which fully its zenith in 1888 while he was staying in Arles.

In the last ten years of his life, Van Gogh painted over 2,000 artwork, consisting of 900 paintings and 1,100 sketches and drawing. His most popular artwork were created in the last two years of his life.

Some of his most popular artwork are Starry Night, Sunflowers, Irises and The Potato Eaters. His painting The Red Vineyard sold for 400 Francs in Brussels a few months prior to his death. His other popular paintings include Starry Night Over The Rhone; and The Café Terrace on the Place du Forum, Arles, at Night.
