Biography Of Serena Williams
Serena Jameka Williams was born on September 26, 1981 in Saginaw, Michigan. She is the fifth and the youngest daughter of Richard Williams and Oracene Price. |
The family moved to Los Angeles suburb of Compton when the children were young. Richard had a dream of making at least one of his five daughters into a tennis superstar. She was coached by her parents at home.
Serena won her first tournament when she was four and a half year old. By the age of ten she had entered into 49 tournaments and she had won in 46. She became a professional tennis payer in September 1995 at the age of 14. But it was in the year 1997 that she achieved certain amount of success. She was ranked World no. 304 and she upset Monica Seles and Mary Pierce and recorded her first career wins against players who were ranked within top 10. At the end of the year her world ranking had risen to 99. Her game improved further and victories continued. By April 1999, she had reached world no. 9 ranking. Both sisters, Venus and Serena, were in the top 10. At the end of 1999, her ranking had improved to no. 4.
There was a slight decline in her performance in the year 2000 and she settled at world no.6. From 1999 to 2009 so far, she has reached 13 singles Grand Slam finals and has recorded 10 wins. In the same period, she has reached 8 doubles Grand Slam finals partnering her sister Venus and has recorded victories in all 8 of them. In mixed doubles, she has reached 4 Grand Slam finals and has won 2 titles. She, along with her sister Venus, was successful in securing Olympic Gold Medal for Doubles in 2000 and 2008.
As of now she is ranked world number one in women's tennis. In 2005, Tennis magazine has ranked her as the 17th best player of the preceding 40 years. She has won more prize money than any other woman in any sport.
