However, this does not distract Maria as she is extremely serious about her career.Maria started playing the sport at a very young age. She was just 4 years old at that time. However, even the great Martina Navratilova recognized her talent and recommended that she be trained in Florida at the Nick Bollettieri's Academy. So, at the age of 9, Maria traveled to the US along with her father to live and train there. And, in 2001, Maria made her debut in the pro circuit on the day she turned 14.
In 2003, finally Maria reaped the benefit of leaving her mother behind in Russia to train in the US. She won her first title. She also made it to the main draw of all the Grand Slams. She managed to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon. It was here, the following year, that Maria instant stardom. She won the Wimbledon, and she was just 17 years old then. Everyone realized that a superstar of ladies tennis was here to stay.
It was not only tennis lovers all over the world who noticed the arrival of a new teen sensation. Advertisers queued up with multi-million dollar deals outside Maria’s doors, and in a year, she was already richer by more than $16 million. Maria did not disappoint her sponsors or her fans. In 2005, she became the top ranked player in the women's circuit, the first Russian lady to do so.
Although Maria is known for her good looks and outstanding performance on the court, she has been plagued with a niggling shoulder injury, which is currently taking a toll on her performance. In 2010, Maria was shocked in the opening round of the Australian Open.
Her fans and well wishers hope that she regains her form that saw her taking the top ranking in the women's circuit not once, but twice.
