Venus Williams is a professional ladies tennis player, who was born on 17 June 1980 in Lynwood, California. She spent a part of a childhood in Compton, a suburb of Los Angeles famous for its gang wars and gun fire. |
It was here at the age of 4 that she started playing tennis in the public courts as her parents could not afford professional coaching.Venus was coached by her father, Richard, but she learned many of her moves by watching matches on the television. She learned that good players found out the weaknesses in their opponents, and then used those weaknesses to win matches. This is a strategy that Venus employs even today while playing.
Her parents realized quite early that Venus had an aptitude for the game. Hence, they decided to home school her. However, according to records, Venus did go to elementary school. She went to Sharon Hill School. But once her family moved to Florida, where she joined the tennis academy run by Rick Macci, Venus was completely home schooled. This move took place in the early parts of the 1990s.
While she was at the academy, Venus used to practice tennis for 6 hours in a day, and for 6 days in a week. This was a training schedule that Venus continued for 4 consecutive years. So, this did not leave her much time for a formal school education. That is why her parents took it upon themselves to home school her. Also, they realized how important education was for Venus and her sister, Serena, who was also blossoming into an excellent tennis player.
