Bill Gates went to Harvard University in 1973, where he developed his first product BASIC – which was a program language for the first microcomputer. He dropped out of Harvard in his junior year and spent his time creating software.
In 1975, he founded Micro-Soft (now known as Microsoft) with his friend Paul Allen. Along with BASIC, Bill Gates worked on his next big product called DOS (basic operating system) which led to the company’s first huge success. He made a deal with IBM to create a version of DOS for its line of personal computers. Soon it became the main operating system used by computer makers, making Microsoft a huge success and Bill Gate, a wealthy man. By the end of 1985, the company had more than 1,000 employees and $200 million in sales.
Being an astute businessman, he continuously looked for ways to expand the company. The company developed a variety of software, ranging from software applications to internet browsers.
Known as a tough competitor, some say that he achieved his success through questionable business tactics. The Microsoft monopoly sets about dominating every market it entered, either through acquisition, its aggressive business tactics, or a combination of the two.
In 1994, Bill Gates married Melinda French. The couple has three children. They also established the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000, which deals with global health and education issues.
In June 2008, 52-year old Bill Gates officially retired after 33 years of running the day to day operations of the company. He devotes his time to the foundation’s cause. He continues as part time chairman of the board.
