For 13 years in a row, Bill Gates was known to be the richest man in the world. His rising fortune was considered to be an indicator of how well the economy and the technology stocks were doing.
As of 2008, Bill Gates is no longer the wealthiest man in the world. Holding some 780 million shares of Microsoft -- roughly 15 percent of the firm, gives Bill Gate a valuation of around $60 billion dollars, depending on the firm’s closing stock price. He is closely trailed by the likes of Larry Ellison and Warren Buffet. Gates is widely considered to be one of the world’s wealthiest men, although the honor now goes to investor Warren Buffet, with a fortune of $62 billion.
Gates officially retired from the day-to-day operations of Microsoft in June, 2008, but remains on the board. He spends more time with his charitable foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
