During his life he is accredited for being awarded 161 US patents. He revolutionized the manufacturing methods introducing concepts of standardization and mass production to minimize costs and maximize output. He was also known for his labor philosophy which changed the entire concept of American industry.
Henry Ford died at his home in Dearborn, Michigan at the age of 83 in the year 1947. The cause of death was cerebral hemorrhage. He is buried at Ford Cemetery in Detroit.
Ford was born on July 30, 1863 to William Ford of Irish ancestry, and Mary Litogot Ford, the daughter of Belgian immigrants.
From a young age, Ford displayed a remarkable aptitude towards mechanical engineering which he pursued at shop floor level. After and apprenticeship as a machinist, he worked for Edison Illuminating Company where he rose to Chief Engineer. During this time he dabbled with, and developed an internal combustion engine, which culminated in building the Ford Quadricycle, the forerunner of his version of the motor car.
Ford went on to found the Ford Motor Company in 1903. In 1908, the company unveiled the Model T, which forever changed the face of motoring in America. When the last model rolled off the assembly line in 1927, over 15 million had been sold. With his concepts of assembly line production, Ford made the motor car accessible to the man in the street.
He is also known for his radical labor policy where he almost doubled wages, introduced a 48 hour working week and still doubled productivity.
Ford had diverse interest and briefly entered the aircraft industry till the Great Depression forced him to withdraw.
Married to Clara Bryant, the couple had only one child, a son named Edsel.
