At California State University, Northridge, Abdul studied broadcasting.  In her first year, she became one of the Lakers girls, the cheerleading squad of the Los Angeles Lakers, selected from out of 700 applicants. She was appointed head choreographer within three months but left within six to focus on her chorography career. Throughout the 1980s, she choreographed for several singers and for dance sequences in many movies.

In 1988, she launched her debut album ‘Forever Your Girl’ which took 62 weeks to hit the #1 spot on the Billboard and remained there for a period of 10 weeks.  The multi-platinum release, Abdul had launched her singing career which continued through the 90s with a series of hits. Abdul suffered from bulimia which she came out of in 1995. Ten years later she revealed that she suffers from a disease called complex regional pain syndrome, a rare neurological ailment that causes chronic pain. She claims to be pain-free now following treatment with anti-inflammatory medication.
