What Religion Is George W Bush ?
Bush is a Christian Methodist by religion and he is the third well-known Methodist who has held the highest office in the nation. The others were his father and William McKinley. There were no indications through out his political career that the Methodist church benefited during his administration. |
Many people agree that just by having a president who is a Methodist does not mean that the political issues will be governed using the church’s view points. In fact, there have been many points that were disagreed by the Methodist Church but Bush supported them. The list of disagreements is several and it is difficult to believe that Bush would oppose the church. For example, Methodists strongly oppose the concept of Capital Punishment and also the possession of hand gun. However, Bush supported both and felt it was necessary.
There are several more, like Methodists condemn gays, Bush allowed gay marriages; Bush supported the abortion rights while the Methodists believe that abortion is a sin. Bush allowed gays in the military while the Church strongly disapproved of it. Bush even gave gays the right to school administration and social security policies, which irked the church further.
Actually Methodists are very diverse people and it shows from Bush’s own policy. Though Methodists believe in Christianity they do not strongly abide by it if they disagree with some values. Bush always argued that he is not putting his Methodist values before what is right and wrong. Also, he maintained that the entire population of the United States does not consist of only Methodists to make policies based on the church’s feelings.
