However, Barack Obama always maintained that he was a Christian by belief and religion. He just borrows the birth name from his father and grandfather who were of Kenyan nationality. He was never influenced by them in his upbringing or religious values as they hardly interacted with him.
The first time he ever met his father’s family was after his father’s death and when Obama was studying at Harvard. Until then he never knew who his cousins or his father’s side of the family.
Obama also maintains that he was completely brought up by his maternal grandparents from his early childhood and they were religious Christians. If anyone has had an influence on him, it was his grandparents who taught many of the values of Christianity to him. His mother who later came back from Indonesia to be with him also believed in Christianity and she was a bigger influence on him than anyone else. So, the only people who ever could influence Obama were his grandparents, and mother.
None of his religious beliefs or daily habits suggested he was a Muslim and like he says he only has a middle name that was passed on to him through his father’s surname. His father and grandfather were Kenyan Muslims and they also lived their entire lives in Kenya. Obama’s father met him only once during his entire childhood when he was 11 in Hawaii. His maternal grandfather was more of a father for him through out his childhood.
