She has an older brother called Craig and her mother, Marian, stayed at home to raise them both. Her father, Frasier Robinson, worked in oil rigs and also was a democrat.
Michelle says that her family was very close knit and they shared their meals together and read together. Michelle was a gifted child from childhood and at a very young age she started learning French and also took accelerated courses. Michelle graduated from the Whitney M. Young Magnet High School in Chicago and went to Princeton University and graduated in sociology.
She studied further in Harvard Law School in 1988 where she met Barack Obama. She took part in many demonstrations fighting on various issues including civil rights. Michelle also worked as a lawyer in a Chicago law firm representing the Marketing and Intellectual Property Department. Barack and Michelle started dating at the law firm and even though she was resilient in the beginning, they eventually ended up marrying each other on October 18, 1992.
After getting married Michelle quit her job and started a career in public service and served as an assistant to Mayor Daley in Chicago. In 1993, Michelle joined the University of Chicago for further studies and also started working as an executive director of community relations and external affairs. Michelle Obama was named the first lady on January 20, 2009 after Barack Obama was sworn as the 44th President of the United States.
