1881: Birth of Sir Alexander Fleming on 6 August
1901: Enrolled in St. Mary Hospital to study medicine
1906: Qualified for the school with distinction and began research as an assistant bacteriologist at St. Mary's Hospital under Sir Almroth Wright who was a pioneer in immunology and vaccine therapy.
1908: Gained M.B., B.S. in London with Gold Medal and became a lecturer at St. Mary's Hospital till 1914
1915: Married Sarah Marion McElroy from Ireland on 23 December
1918: After serving throughout World War I as a captain in Army Medical Corps, he returned to St. Mary’s which was then a teaching hospital
1919: Awarded the Hunterian Professorship by the Royal College of Surgeons, England
1928: Elected professor of bacteriology at St. Mary’s
1923: Discovery of lysozyme (an enzyme), bacteriolytic substance in tissues and secretions
1928: Discovery of penicillin, an antibiotic substance which is now widely used to treat bacterial infections
1942: Gained Williams Julius Mickle Fellowship at the University of London
1944: Won Charles Mickle Fellowship at the University of Toronto;
1945: Shared the Nobel Prize along with Howard Walter, Florey and Ernst Boris Chain; Honored Cameron Prize at the University of Edinburgh; Won the Moxon Medal at the Royal College of Physicians; Won the Cutter Lecturer Award at the Harvard University
1946: Awarded Honorary Gold Medal by Royal College of Surgeons; Won the Albert Gold Medal at the Royal Society of Arts
1947: Won Gold Medal at the Royal Society of Medicine and the Medal for Merit from U.S.A
1948: Became Emeritus professor of bacteriology, University of London
1953: Married Dr. Amalia Koutsouri-Voureka on April 9 after death of his first wife in 1949
1955: Sudden death of Sir Alexander Fleming on 11 March due to heart attack

 Sir Alexander Fleming was born on August 6, 1881 in Scotland. Before enrolling at St Mary's Hospital to study medicine in 1901, he worked in a shipping office for about four years. In 1906, he won distinctions and qualified for the school.
