Marie Curie Timeline Biography


Marie Curie, a well known physicist and chemist, was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and the first great person to be awarded with two Nobel prizes during her lifetime.

She held multiple degrees in math, physics and chemistry. She was a pioneer of radioactivity and discovered two elements called polonium and radium. She also contributed to the first studies in the treatment of cancers using radioactive isotopes.

Marie Curie Timeline Biography:


1867: Born on November 7 in Warsaw, Poland


1891: Went to Paris for higher studies at Sorbonne. She became the first woman instructor at Sorbonne at a later date


1895: Married Pierre Curie


1903: Won the first Nobel Prize along with her husband Pierre Curie for their contribution to the study of spontaneous radiations of the element discovered by Becquerel; Awarded Davy Medal of the Royal Society with her husband


1904: became the chief assistant in her husband’s laboratory.


1906: Death of her husband Pierre Curie in a tragic accident


1911: Won the second Nobel Prize in recognition of her work in radioactivity


1914: Was appointed Director of the Radium Institute in Paris


1921: President Warren gifted Marie Curie a gram of radium


1922: Became a member of the French Academy of Medicine and devoted her work to medical applications of radioactive substances.


1932: Founded a Radium institute at Warsaw; her sister Brownia was appointed the director. This institute is now popularly called Maria Skłodowska-Curie Institute of Oncology


1934: Died in France on July 4 following a short span of illness

Her entire family which included husband Pierre Curie, her daughter Joliot-Curie and her son-in-law Frédéric Joliot-Curie won Nobel Prizes during their lifetime.
